Ties have become standard additions to the suit for a variety of occasions. But, if you’re looking for a change and maybe want to make a statement, what are the alternatives?

It should be taken into account that corporate style often states the wearing of a tie as compulsory so these instances don’t really provide for much leeway. But, there are always exceptions to this rule. Depending on what line of business you are in or what your next meeting can dictate whether you even need to wear a tie at all.

The original modern style neck accessory, the cravat was replaced by the tie dates back to the 17th century and has military origins. Available in an array of materials and shades, the cravat is an option at formal social affairs such as weddings and balls. They are much wider than traditional ties and are often complimented with a cufflinks and tie pin set. To tie a cravat you must firstly turn up your collar and place the cravat around your neck. Keep the wider end to the front and that the right side is about an inch longer than the left. Take the long side and lift it over the short side. Then take the long side once again and wrap it around the short side from underneath. Take the long side and feed it through the loop around your neck. To conceal the knot you can use a tie pin to hold the cravat in place.

The bow tie in recent years has experienced more popularity appearing on many movies stars on the red carpet. The bow tie is a formal accessory, worn with a suit or dinner jacket and a wing collar shirt. Always tied symmetrically, self tie bowties, or freestyle ties consist of a strip of silk, polyester or cotton that are tied by hand. Admittedly bowties are difficult to tie. Clip on bowties are also readily available but it is always advisable to invest in a good quality one if possible.

Bowties do exude a certain amount of tradition and conservatism often associated with doctors, magicians and professors. It’s always best to adhere to Black Tie invites and not be tempted to personalize your bowtie; it is often considered the ultimate faux pas. It’s always advisable to ask an experienced bow tie wearer how to tie it.

Other more adventurous replacements include the cowboy bolo which is a piece of cord or leather worn around the neck and secured with a signature clasp. Needless to say this item is considered a statement piece and is not suitable for formal attire. For more casual social events skinny scarves are now being used draped around the neck of an open collared shirt for style and sophistication.
