Are Crystal And Diamond Harmful To Human Body?

A few days ago a friend asked me: are the natural gems harmful to human body? It is said by a newspaper mined crystals and diamonds contain radiation, is it true? I haven’t seen the newspaper my refer to. But I am a bit angry with this extreme saying because comsumers will be misled by such reports. How can they come to such a conclusion without evidence?

To find the truth, I have read lots of books and paper materials. But I still find no case saying that diamond and precious stones harm human body. I have to confess that as minerals diamond and precious stones may have very little radioactive elements. However, I believe they are harmless to our body since our ancestors like to wear jewelry from ancient times.

In addition, precious stones’ coming into being depends largely on the geological conditions such as temperature, pressure, chemical composition and has nothing to do with the radioactivity in the surrounding environment. Only a very few gems like zircon may be mixed with a very small amount of radioactive nuclides u-238 and the crystal of casi thorium ore or square thorium stone contains a certain amount of radioactivity. However, it is hard to find them in the market because they are extremely rare but not expensive. Only some gems researchers will collect them.

Having read all the ancient and modern literature, I didn’t find a natural diamond with radioactivity. You may know diamond’s chemical composition is carbon element. There are three kinds of of carbon isotopes but only 14c is radioactive. However, 14c  only accounts one in a billion and it will disappear after several half-life. Therefore, it is impossible to do harm to human body.

zircon crystals?

how do zircon crystals end up as grains of sandstone

Seems to be a volcanic byproduct
zircon rises through the crust in igneous rocks and is then eroded in to the stream system and laid down in the sediment beds where it becomes part of the next cycle of sandstone.
