Well, the piece looks nice.. I’ll admit. Unfortunately, at $270, you’re paying about $250 for “craftsmanship” and $20 for the metal and the diamond. I see this kind of thing all the time at the pawn shop… people come in with jewelry they paid a couple hundred bucks for, and it turns out not even to be made of precious metal. If you bought it for the looks, it was a good buy. If you bought it for its value, you’ve been had by the jewelry industry.
Most pawn shops strictly deal in precious metals for the simple fact that if they can’t sell a certain item in a reasonable amount of time, it can be melted down for its “weight value”. For example, a gold rope necklace might be put into the jewelry case with a $1200 price tag. If it doesn’t sell after a while, it can still be melted down and fetch $800 in the form of a gold brick.
In the case of your cross, it has no melt value. The value is entirely in the craftsmanship, and if the item failed to sell, the pawn shop that bought it would be stuck with it. It’d be a losing proposition for them.
At a pawn shop that has a very strong jewelry market, it’d be worth all of $10 to $20 at best. Most pawn shops, though, would simply decline to take it in. They see rather exquisitely made pieces of gold and silver jewelry everyday, so steel jewelry, no matter how well made, doesn’t really appeal to them.
