Watches possess a special history of their own, actually there is really a story to tell. The history of the watch as we all know it dates back to ancient times. During the 15th century watches evolved from the portable spring driven clocks. watches were a sought after item and handcrafted.

Long before World War I, only women wore wristwatches not men. One of the reasons that men did not wear watches was that it had been considered ‘unmanly’.  Nowadays we find that all members of a family wear wristwatches,  from the patents right down to the children, clearly showing that it is an essential element of our daily lives. The first timepieces that were worn were made during the 16th century in Europe. These watches were transitional in size between clocks and watches. With styles changing during the 1600s, men began to wear pocket watches. In order to fit inside pockets, their shape evolved into the typical pocket watch shape, rounded and flattened with no sharp edges.

Wristwatches became fashionable for men to wear as a result of their use by soldiers who needed to have access to them while their hands were full. These first wristwatches, called ‘trench watches’, were created using pocket watch movements. The very first successful self-winding system was invented by John Harwood in 1923. From then onwards, watches have gone through constant renovation and stylizing.

Today we have got watches that aren’t just timepieces, but they have also become a form of jewelry, an adornment to smarten up a person’s appearance and give a touch of dazzle to an occasion. Needless to say they are  essential for everyday as well as a necessity to stay on target in today’s business orientated society.
