Fun Facts about our Solar System

Our solar system is a strange, mysterious and amazing place. The eight planets that make up our solar system are interesting and different in many ways. The lifeblood of our solar system, the Sun, is still confounding and surprisingly scientists and astronomers today. So pull up a bar stool and check out these fun facts about out solar system.

-          The Sun is a near perfect sphere.

-          It is believed that Venus once contained Earth-like oceans several billion years ago.

-          The clouds of Venus produce lighting very much like those on Earth

-          While colonization of the surface of Venus does not seem possible, some have speculated that “floating cities” in the hospitable atmosphere of Venus could be possible

-          The Sun composes 99.86% of the total mass of our solar system.

-          Venus is sometimes referred to as the “sister planet” of Earth due to its similar size, gravity and bulk composition.

-          Many don’t know it but Uranus also has a planetary ring system which is largely made up of dark particles.

-          Venus has no solid inner core, meaning the surface and inner part of the planet are all relatively the same temperature.

-          Both Neptune and Uranus are thought to have seasonal changes not unlike that of Earth’s

-          The clouds of Venus produce lighting very much like those on Earth

-          Mercury is the least understood of the terrestrial planets

-          Venus is the only feminine named planet in our solar system

-          The Sun is a near perfect sphere.

-          A controversial book, “World’s In Collision” by Immanuel Velikovsky, posited that many of the strange events in the Bible and Old Testament were caused by Venus’ near collision with Earth when it was still a comet and not yet a docile planet.
