Simulation of magnetizing a nail?

We had two nails. We rubbed one back and forth on a magnet, and the other one only in a single direction. Then, we tried to see how much iron filings they would magnetize. I wasn’t really able to compare because of the short time we had. But I think that rubbing the nail only in one direction would work more because the atomic magnets will be more aligned.
We were asked to simulate this experiment.
The instruction is:
Mount a paper disk on a pin such that the disk is free to rotate. Glue some iron filings on one half of the disk. Slowly move the magnet over the disk in one direction. See what happens. Try moving the magnet back and forth. See what happens this time.
Now, imagine if you have many disks in a row, how would the disks react to the magnet?

Basically what you are building is a compass.
As you move the magnet back and forth, the iron filings will point themselves more or less toward the magnet.
If however, you make a long row of these, you should note that while those far away at each end point toward the magnet, those in the middle will actually point parallel to the magnet. This is because they will align themselves with the magnetic field lines, that zip out of the north of the magnet, loop around the sides of the magnet parallel to the magnet, and then zip into the south end.
