These days you can easily find loose rubies, sapphires and loose emeralds online which you can then use in the various customized form of jewelry ruby rings. However, you have to ensure that you do not end up as a victim of a fraud. You should know how to evaluate the loose sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Here are some tips which can help you out:

• If you want to learn about the evaluation of the loose emeralds, sapphires and rubies, you first have to understand about the color, the cut, the clarity and the carat value of these gemstones. They make a significant contribution to the prices.

• You may come across some loose rubies, sapphires or emeralds with a special cut, such gemstones are very expensive, because a lot of work is done on them to bring out that particular cut or shape.

• You also have to learn about the polishing of the gemstones and their symmetry. The process of polishing is a way to improve the overall appearance and the sheer brilliance of the gemstones. It also further adds to the way a gemstone sparkles in the presence of light. On the other hand by symmetry one refers to the gemstone’s cut being equal from everywhere. Well, there are no perfect loose rubies, emeralds and sapphires in the world; however with the higher symmetry the gemstones refract more light, therefore appearing shinier than usual.

• Before you buy the loose gemstones always demand a certificate for authenticity to certify their quality. Make sure that the certificates you are given have been issued by a recognized Gemological institute. It helps you to judge the quality of the gemstones and to avoid any problems in the future.

• You have to be aware of the different price ranges in which the gemstones are available.

• There are many traditional as well as online sellers, get a quote from one of them. Once you have the quote compare it with the other sellers selling the gemstones online. There is a fair chance that this way you will be able to get a good price for the loose rubies, sapphires, emeralds and other gemstones.

• The key is to shop around for the loose sapphires, emeralds and loose rubies till the time you find he right price. Perseverance certainly pays.

Using the above tips you can easily find the right loose emeralds, rubies and sapphires for your jewelry at the right prices.

How to get scratches off a ruby (ruby ring)?

I have an antique ruby ring that is beautiful. The problem is, the ruby has alot of little scratches on it. I took it to a jeweler to get cleaned and when they cleaned it the band is beautiful and shiny but the ruby still has all those little scratches on it. Does anyone know how to get scratches off of the ruby?

2 things:

1. To get scratches off of a ruby, you would have to have a lapidary re-polish it for you. This is not polishing with a cloth, this means taking the stone out of its setting and using a machine with a wheel and special chemical compounds. Effectively, to get rid of the scratch, it is necessary to remove a tiny layer off the ruby stone to make it even again. Only a specifically trained lapidary should do this.

2. Are you sure it’s a ruby? One of the properties of ruby is that it is very scratch resistant. Nothing can scratch it except for a diamond or another ruby. Gemstone hardness is measured along Mohs scale (1-10 and ruby is 9). So unless this antique ring has been in a bag with a bunch of diamonds, sapphires or other rubies, jumbling around against each other, it could be possible that the stone is something else. For example, a lot of antique “ruby” rings are found to actually contain garnets or doublets.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter what the stone is as long as you love it and enjoy it. But if you want those scratches removed, you will have to take it to a lapidary and the lapidary will need to know exactly what stone it is in order to polish it properly.
