10 POINTS FOR BEST ANSWER: Is there an easy way to change to a solid black background with photoshop?
I got 800 product pics which need to have their backgrounds changed to a solid black colour for cataloging. How do you do this with photoshop and is there a bulk edit tool around for all 800?.
Just been able to do one would be nice… Many you tube clicks but all seem to be long winded and complicated
Got 10 points for the best answer!.
Thanks in Advance..
What you are trying to do is called a “matte” or a “knockout,” and how you do it depends a great deal on what you’re starting with. If your version of Photoshop has a plugin included to do this, it generally involves painting (in a new layer, of course), one color over the subject, and one color over the background, while avoiding the tough areas in between. When you hit “go,” the software continues your work, painting up to the edge of your subject without going over the lines.
If you don’t have a plugin for this, you can buy one like Corel Knockout (about $100 I think); there are also free and shareware options available.
If you don’t want to go this route, experiment using the magic wand tool (W), with different tolerance settings. Clicking on an area with sharp definitions will automatically select it. You can incrementally paint it in with black, or select the whole area, create a new layer, and paint the black over the photo, then slightly blur the new layer to make it look a little nicer. “Select similar” will speed this task up as long as you have a an object that stands out from the background. Remember to use undo and redo to your advantage!
Another way to do this if your subject contrasts well with the background is to use the curves tool or the selective color tool to “blow out” the background. For example, if the background is lighter than the subject, you can make a vertical jump in the curve that will turn the background pure white. Then you can click in the magic wand and “select similar” and instantly have the whole background selected. Likewise if the background is darker, you can save a step by making it pure black with the curve editor.
